Nature's Gift of Water

Joining forces with Unicef, Biotherm enters the fall with the Nature’s Gift of Water campaign. Going into its sixth year, this collaboration has resulted in pure drinking water for over 40 000 children in need. For the month of October, when you purchase an Aquasource set ($43), the proceeds will be used to build wells, fund water testing, and construct toilets in homes in Mulawi, which is one of the poorest countries in the world. Attached to this campaign is the “Draw Me the Gift of Water” contest, available for children 12 years old and under. This competition aims to educate young Canadians about the issues of water scarcity and the cause defended by Biotherm and Unicef.

MODEL UPDATE

FABRIC Magazine’s very own Model Update! We are going to update you on three amazing Toronto Models: a well known veteran, a rising star, and a new face in Toronto. In that order; Elmer Olsen’s Daria Werbowy and Amanda Laine and Stylus Models' Nicole J.

THE FRONT AND BACK OF FRENCH VOGUE

Canada’s own Daria Werbowy was discovered walking around 5’11 at age 14. Her career began with Susan J. Model & Talent, soon after Daria signed with Elite Model Management. Currently in Toronto Daria is represented by Elmer Olsen Model Management, and internationally by the International Modeling Group (IMG) in New York, which is her mother agency. Since then, Daria has risen to the top of the international super modeling realm, fronting campaigns for Lancome, Prada, YSL, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Hermes, Valentino, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. Featured on the front, back, and feature editorial of Paris Vogue's August issue, shown above, in addition to a fashion spread in the September Paris Vogue. Werbowy was quoted saying she would retire at 25 and move home to her Toronto suburb, only weeks from her 25th birthday (November 19th). We can only wait to see what she does... we’re hoping she decides to work here in Toronto!

A RISING STAR

They sure are creating some supermodels over there at Elmer Olsen; 5’11 Amanda Laine with legs from here to Saskatchewan is on the rise. Winner of the V A Model Search Amanda received a three year model management contract with Supreme Management in New York. This rising star has already done runway for Prada, Marni, Marc Jacobs and Balencianga. Amanda has representation in Toronto, New York, London, Milan and Paris.

FABRIC to FLARE

Pick up the November issue of FLARE and check out the new face of Toronto, Nicole J. Sixteen-year old Nicole J., scouted and represented by Canadian industry mogul Cynthia Cully former agency director of FORD Models Toronto and current agency director at Stylus Models. Cully, who has been at Stylus for less than a year, is well on her way to creating an agency to be reckoned with. Only a few months ago Nicole was featured in her very first editorial shot by Toronto native Ryan Faubert in our very own FABRIC Magazine. The phenomenal 6 page editorial spread in FLARE shot by renowned photographer Max Abadian is one of two editorials for Nicole this month; she is also featured in Anokhi. Nicole can also be found on two additional pages of FLARE (the table of contents, and a feature page). Be sure to keep an eye out for this new face as Nicole is still to be published in an upcoming issue of Verve Girl. Nicole J. is represented by The Agent-C & Stylus Models in Toronto and Montage Models in Montreal.

In celebration of its 30th birthday, Italian denim label Diesel is giving its customers a present: limited edition Dirty Thirty jeans (in Diesel's popular Heeven style) for the giveaway of price of $50 (€30). Unfortunately for us Canadians, the jeans are only available at the Diesel store located in Montreal. Continuing its celebration, Diesel is throwing a party in 17 cities across the world. The massive celebration will sweep across the globe, igniting in each successive time zone in an international event from Japan to New York City. Today marks the rebirth of a salon by Husband and wife team Gisella and Sandro. This creative and visionary duo have teamed together to bring Pop Hair to 471 Richmond Street West, and were kind enough to let the team at FABRIC have a first peek at the awesome result. This brand-spanking-newly renovated second floor studio features 6 chairs for all your cut, styling, and colouring needs and wants, as well as a coffee bar and lounge/waiting area. The icing on the cake is that Pop Hair also offers make-up services to compliment your new 'do. Newly sponsored by cosmetic giant Wella Sebastian, the original Pop was under the name 'Pop Design' at its old location on Spadina and Adelaide, and has gotten an image and name makeover in the last 6 months. The product is a gorgeous new salon with vision, panache, and no doubt - style. Check it out next time you're in the area!

Fad to Trend: Trail Blazer

Ever since Balenciaga showed crested blazers in their Fall 2007 collection, these prep-school comebacks have been on everyone's mind. It wasn't until this fall, however, that the crested blazer truly found its way onto the pages of Teen Vogue and the streets of Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Los Angeles alike (partially due, we believe, to Gossip Girl). These blazers come in a variety of colours depending on the designer and with a range of different sized and coloured blazers. We love navy and gold for a classic high school throwback, but feel free to get creative with red, green, and everything in between. Since the weather is getting cooler, try looking for a blazer in wool or cashmere for warmth and layering purposes. Pair the blazer with a striped scarf and loafers to complete the collegiate look or change it up with pumps and a pashmena scarf for your workday. We love Club Monaco for a toned-down black, Ralph Lauren for a strong and bold crest, Talula at Aritzia for soft wool and cashmere in grey or navy blue, or Forever21 if you're not looking to invest too much.

If you're not the blazer type but want to embrace a crested button up or sweater, try Club Monaco or Forever 21 for sweet cardigans. Back to the books never looked so hot.

Launch: Fred Perry

As we reported earlier this week, Fred Perry is taking on Queen West. Last night was the official launch of the UK label here in Toronto, and we at FABRIC were invited to the media event. We feel that Fred Perry is a unique label which caters to a fashion forward and individualistic consumer, and we love it! Queen West is the perfect location for their new store! The launch was held at the Wrong Bar, also on Queen West, and was headlined by the Superstitions. While we think Fred Perry is be a label to look out for we were a bit confused by the launch; where was the fashion? We expected to see the current collection, either in a runway show or on models at the party! Headliners the Superstitions, although very talented, were not even outfitted by the label. The Fred Perry Subculture, which is an initiative by the company to give back to underground music, which the company attributes its early success, is the only explanation to the media release. Either way it was a great time! Here are some pictures, enjoy, and be sure to check out the new store.
