Gisele's Versace Ads

A few weeks ago we told you Gisele decided to wear Versace to the Costume Institute Gala. Her dress was inspired by the dress she wears for Versace's Fall/Winter 2009 campaign. The ads were shot by famed photographer Mario Testino.

Dsquared2 talk Canada

The designers are...busy in their native land of Canada. They’ll shoot the commercial for their first scent in the mountain resort of Banff in July, then be honoured with a star on Toronto’s Walk of Fame in September, followed by taking up the designing mantle for outfits at the opening ceremony for Vancouver’s 2010 winter Olympics. "We’re already late on that one," said Dean. "They won’t tell us who we’re dressing," added Dan. "We’re like ‘Can I know who it is or at least give me the measurements so we can get started?’"

Elizabeth & James shoes

A few months ago we told you about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's collaboration with shoe giant Steve Madden. Well we finally have a sneak peak at the Elizabeth and James shoe collection.

The shoes are made out of ostrich (yet another eff u to PETA), suede, and pony hair, and includes a neutral colour palatte of browns, blacks and greys. Some have criticized the line saying that this shoe collection has no connection to the feel of Elizabeth and James' previous collections.

To see a video of the girls at work discussing their collection and collaboration with Steve Madden click here.

Toronto Store Opening

(Toronto, Ontario – May 13th, 2009) – eleven boutique will open its doors on May 16th at 116 Cumberland St in the heart of Toronto’s prestigious Yorkville neighbourhood.

eleven is the latest landmark in the new renaissance that Yorkville is enjoying and is sure to establish itself as a must stop shopping destination not only for Toronto’s savvy stylistas but international fashion mavens as well. The store promises to provide access to both Canadian and global fashion lines, and to create a venue that becomes synonymous with high quality service, and unparalleled selection.

Boasting a design aesthetic created exclusively by II BY IV Design Associates, eleven creates a shopping experience that fuses fashion with art and architecture - reflecting the sophistication and quality of the brands housed within. The once Victorian row house has now been transformed into an open and modern space featuring dramatic views through a large shop window. Inside the over-sized ebony stained oak door you will find an elegant and sleek, glowing white interior utilizing a high contrast palette of black and off-white lacquer and transparent glass walls to showcase the fashion perfectly. Details such as textural wall coverings, ebonized oak wood floors, and a hand carved wool carpet add greater design depth. A sculptural series of acrylic and chrome vertical elements commissioned by a local artist complete the stylish ambience. With over 150 awards to their credit, II BY IV has created a truly exceptional retail experience.

eleven believes in showcasing great Canadian fashion lines alongside international collections. Minimalistic and modern dresses and separates by Joeffer Caoc, theatrical and magical exclusive Thien Le gowns, and elegant and effortless Lundström featuring the coveted ‘Tuck n’ Tie” dress will all be on proud display in the store; carefully selected for their innovative design and superior quality.

Jewellery shines in eleven, with a diverse assortment, including Hollywood favourites Ted Rossi’s and Claudia Loboa’s Californian cool designs, worn by tinsel town trendsetters Eva Longoria Parker, Miley Cyrus and Nelly Furtado. Kendra Scott creations radiate a ladylike and sophisticated appeal that flawlessly compliments the legendary Gerard Yosca collection, high fashion hand-crafted to perfection pieces that have been a favourite pick for the pages of VOGUE and ELLE.

eleven plans to provide the sophisticated shopper with a bevy of fashion accessories, to make any outfit stand out from the crowd. Love Quotes’ luxurious and opulent scarves, a favourite of Hollywood-ite Jessica Alba, add a refined touch to any ensemble with a love message to literally wear on your sleeve. Hats are supplied from Flora Bella, wide brimmed and whimsical, a perfect fit for a tropical vacation or the city’s hottest patio.

No shortage of bags will adorn eleven’s shelves. International finds such as Israeli luxury brands Riva and Kisim – Kisim’s cube bag was featured on Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City movie. eleven will also feature Parisian Designer Jean-Pierre Klifa’s passion project JPK Paris 75 that crafts handbags from rare and magnificent materials.

eleven is dedicated to identifying itself not only as a venue for a high quality shopping experience, but also to provide its customers with access to lines that, until now, have not been available in Toronto. New York’s Bodhi bags with their signature “safety pin clutch” made famous on Gossip Girl, hand–made clutches from Brazilian designer Diego Rocha, and Fortune Cookie Wristlet by Angela Culver will premier in Toronto within eleven four walls. Jewellery lines; Valerie Downs, a collection of statement pieces using semi precious stones and silver wire that have starlets like Shannon Elizabeth singing its praises, and Hamilton Crawford, a selection of bold, graphic pieces that combine precious metals with resin, complete a fashion selection that will satisfy the upscale shopper’s appetite.

eleven will open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Saturday from 10AM to 6PM; Thursday and Friday 10AM to 8PM; and Sunday from Noon to 5PM.

From Daisy to Lola

After the success of his first perfume "Daisy", Marc Jacobs introduced his second scent "Lola".

Jacobs specifically picked the name Lola to be the antithesis to the friendly Daisy. He envisioned Lola as being the "vampy older sister" to Daisy.

Jacobs' told WWD, "where Daisy is more innocent and sweet, Lola is more sensual - the name conjures up a flirtatious, warm spirit," he said. "It was the first thing that came to my mind. It just felt natural in contrast to Daisy."

The scent features pink peppercorn, pear, vanilla, and grapefruit. It's a citrus based scent compared to Daisy which was naturally more floral.

"Fragrance is just as important as accessories, bags, and shoes are. Not only does it help set a mood, it's a luxury you can have no matter what your size or height or wallet. I'm happy to keep offering more choices. I know I like to rotate fragrances depending on my mood."

Lola will officially be in stores in the fall, but Bloomingdales will have a one month exclusive in August.

Linda & Naomi Scrap for DSquared2

DSquared2 have decided to forego the "it girl" models and famous celebrities to be the faces of their new ad campaign. They've gone to the tried and true supermodels of the 90's. Canadian, and my hometown (shout out to St. Catharines!) girl, Linda Evangelista goes nose to nose with Naomi Campbell in the Spring/Summer 2009 ads.

The photos were shot by famed photographer Steven Meisel. The ads shows the two beauties squaring off in combat.

The ads have garnered their fair share of controversy because they show a black woman and a white woman fighting. Some argue that Naomi seems to be the aggressor in the ads which some say is blatant racism and an inappropriate portrayal of a certain race. Linda's facial expressions emote a sense of weakness and fear. Critics are arguing that it's another example of white people fearing black people and that ads like these perpetuate the ignorance. On the other hand, others are saying that it is only right for Naomi to be the aggressor, knowing her history and her troubles with the law.

You may not buy into all of this, but it is certainly something to think about.

Controversy aside, the women and the pictures look beautiful.

H&M Goes S&M

We've been pimping H&M pretty hard lately, but trust us we don't get any kickbacks. The label has just been doing some really great things within the fashion industry lately which has warrented attention. They've grabbed headlines for teaming up with Matthew Williamson and now they'll grab shoppers attention because of their newest line, Divided Exlusive.

The line is a complete 180 from Williamson's line or anything H&M has done before. There are no girly skirts or pretty tees. H&M decided to go dark and edgy with this line, inspired by sadomasochism.

The line is all about leather, fur, velvet, studs and includes a lot of black. And i mean a lot of it! The fabrics have a lot to do with the feel of it. The line includes a leather bodysuit, a skirt with garder belts, a fur dress, and a velvet dress and vest.

This is a pretty controversial line considering H&M is a pretty friendly shopping mall store. It will either sink or swim. Fashionista's everywhere will either line up in droves to get their hands on it or they will be put off by it and stay far away. I think if you look at the pieces individually versus the entire collection you'll see that some of the pieces are really fantastic!

I still don't know how I feel about crushed velvet, but I probably said the same thing about skinny jeans and shoulder pads a few years ago.

SLICE Magazine

In February SLICE Magazine gave the Canadian Fashion Association and The Daily Thread a nice little shout out on their SLICE blog. So we thought we'd return the favour.

SLICE blog was created to display and promote primarily Canadian artists, as well as to encourage discourse among the arts and culture community. We hope to foster and spark interest in the Canadian arts scene and we would like to use this as a platform for Canadian artists to gain attention for their work and thrive within Canada and hopefully beyond our borders.Fashion/textile, visual/fine arts, musicians, writers/poets, video/photo, general arts and culture will all be discussed on SLICE.

Check it out, you'll love it!

How to Look Chic, on the Cheap

Current economic conditions have hit most fashionista's Prada wallets in a bad way. If you have 2008 champagne tastes, on a 2009 beer budget, then read on for tips to look chic on the cheap.

It's all in the details. Truer words have never been spoken, when it comes to fashion and beauty on a budget. Small details that won't break the bank can make all the difference.

Face Value:
Clear, radiant skin is the canvas for all beauty looks. That being said, buy the best cleanser you can afford. Use it. Acne is never in style.

Just Brow(s)ing:
Although thick, full brows are very now, unruly brows are never in fashion. To avoid looking like Groucho Marx, seek out your local Indian beauty shop. These shops charge far less than their salon competitors, but deliver a service that is unmatched by a wax-bearing intern at your typical hair salon. Having your eyebrows threaded for $7.00 a pop can do wonders for your overall look.

Hairy Situation:
Nix unnatural hair colours. That platinum blond bob may seem like a good idea on pay day, but 3 months down the road you'll be cursing the beauty gods for the 3rd hair salon visit in as many months. Roots are never chic, and monthly upkeep is a bitch.

Very Pressing:
Steer clear of anything that can be pressed or glued on. This includes:

Hair extensions- they look cheap on Paris, and they look even cheaper on you.

Nails- Acrylic nails scream cheap, not chic. Not only are they unhygienic, (think of all that crud lurking beneath that French tip), they are expensive to maintain with monthly fills. Remove them and hide the damaged nail with dark nail polish on your new short, chic set.

Eyelashes- Unless you can pay to have real ones applied at a salon, leave the thick, shiny glue-on set to the drag queens. That doe-eyed look isn't fooling anyone.

Chanel 2.56?
Can't afford the latest Chanel 2.55 handbag? Tempted to make a trip incognito to Chinatown? Remove the sunglasses and scarf, and forget it sister! Accept reality, and know that a true fashionista can sniff out a fake a mile away, and the truly fashion hopeless can't tell the difference anyway. This begs the question, “What's the point??!!”. Instead, buy the best you can afford. Stores like Nine West and Zara have great bags in rich leather, which are always more stylish than that Chanel imposter.

We've Got Sole
If you're going to splurge on one item, make it footwear. A good quality pair of leather shoes are invaluable, and really cannot be compromised when the aim is chic. So buy 2 pairs, a heel and a flat, and take care of them. Buff scuffs, polish and re-enforce the heel to make those babies last.

Gisele for Versace

Gisele Bundchen got the idea for her MET Costume Institute Gala dress when she was posing for Versace's Fall/Winter 2009/10 advertising campaign.

Her requests for the dress were blue and short. “I thought it was because of the whole thing of models as muses,” she said. “Models are about high heels and short dresses. And you can actually go for it in this kind of theme. It’s like, why not? Show some legs.”

Expect to see Gisele gracing the ad campaigns in magazines this summer.

Posh in Panties

Victoria Beckham has joined her husband David Beckham for Emporio Armani's Fall/Winter '09/10 underwear advertising campaign.

Posh had previously said she has "saggy skin" and looks "really awful" naked. These ads beg to differ. "It's an honor to have been selected by Mr. Armani to represent the Emporio Armani Underwear brand and to execute his vision with the incredibly talented team of Mert & Marcus," she said.

The ad's will run in magazines and a 20 foot banner hangs at Macy's Herald Square in NYC.
